The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: A real-time 3D ambiance in the Leadwerks bold engine

In March 2010 I was contracted by the Leadwerks Corporation to design a large scale environment for the Leadwerks real time game engine. The purpose of this environment is to showcase the many features of the Leadwerks engine with consistant, next-gen artwork. The environment is titled simply “The Zone” , and it draws inspiration from a variety of sources. Some of these sources include the 1972 Russian sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and the 1979 film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky, which took inspiration from Roadside Picnic. The Zone takes place in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the Chernobyl region of the Ukraine. Filmed in 2009, this short documentary truly captures the spirit and dedication of the Pacific Pinball Museum – www.pacificpinball.org To most who remember it, Pinball is considered a dusty relic of a bygone era. The only places you’ll find Pinball machines today are home game rooms of private collectors or dark corners of seedy bars. As far as the general public is concerned, it has all but faded into obscurity. However, one group of dedicated men and women have decided to right the ship and save Pinball from extinction. Their goal is to preserve Pinball for what it really is: a national treasure of pure American engineering, art, and design. The Pacific Pinball Museum was founded in the late 90’s by Michael Schiess, a multi-disciplined artist and an avid fan of museums. Over the years Mike has grown the non-profit organization into 13 board members and an army of dedicated volunteers, as well as amassing and restoring a staggering collection of Pinball machines. Every fall since 2007, the PPM gathers over 400 of their restored and fully playable Pinball machines to host the annual Pacific Pinball Exposition in San Rafael, CA. What would be the perfect storm for any student wanting to take classes on game creation? The game development and design schools would likely employ award winning designers with real world experience, provide complimentary access to a wide range of industry specific tools, and enroll students bent on learning the trade at any cost. Many, many schools deploy all of these offerings to students each and every semester. In fact, many design schools have much more in store for their student body.

Many of the game design schools may be names we hear all the time, but never associated with video game design degrees, like ITT Technical Institute. Of course to receive a degree other coursework must be taken and passed as well. A training in video game programming and design can mean a career in a fast-paced, exciting industry that continues to grow with each passing year. The design degrees can be pursued both in offline institutions, but also through online ones.

Maasai and Zulu tribes: The Real face of Africa

Africa has long been considered home of the origin of mankind, with historians digging up for more information for evidence every time. For many years, the traditions and customs of many different African tribes have stood up up-to-date though western influence has had a lot of impacts. Yet, the Maasai tribe of East Africa and the Zulu tribe of South Africa, though different as many perceive them; have maintained and kept their traditions and customs intact even with pressures to conform to the global setting. Internationally, the Maasai and Zulu tribes are the best known and famous tribes in Africa. However, close observation of these traditions when compared reveal that many changes have occurred due to the influence of globalization. Yet, their cultures stand out as the most compact in the African setting. Interestingly, though from different parts of Africa, the Maasai and the Zulu have similarities in their behaviors and customs and they have fiercely fought to protect their cultures, giving us a great picture of Africa.
